Beyond the Headlines
Rather than focusing only on the victim’s story, the filmmakers attempted to explore the circumstances surrounding the crime and the questions raised by the subsequent encounter. Ram Gopal Varma described the film as a dark drama and said its intention was to present a dramatic representation of the real-life incident and make audiences think about why such crimes occur.
A Challenging Chapter
The film underwent a significant journey before its theatrical release. Originally announced as Disha Encounter, its title was changed to Aasha Encounter following legal and censor-related issues. The CBFC certified the film with an A certificate in April 2021, with several modifications, including removal of the word “Disha” from the title and film. It eventually reached theatres on 1 January 2022.
